SDP announces its 2024-2026 Central Executive Committee line-up
On 3 February 2024, cadre members of the Singapore Democratic Party elected the organisation’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) at the 21st Ordinary Party Conference (OPC).
Following the OPC, the CEC convened to confirm the appointment of key office holders and members – all of whom will serve a two-year term from February 2024.
The current CEC line-up remains largely unchanged from its former iteration, save for Mr Alfred Tan vacating his position as the result of a decision to step down, and the co-option of long-time member Mr Abdul Salim Harun. Mr Salim is a 41 year-old professional caregiver who began volunteering with the party in 2013 and joined as a member in 2018. As captain of the Marsiling-Yew Tee (MYT) GRC Ground Operations team, Mr Salim regularly organises house visits, walkabouts, and social programmes within the constituency. He was also responsible for establishing the Befrienders Team, an initiative aimed at strengthening community bonds and helping residents in need.
The re-election of members from the preceding CEC stands as a testament to the party’s confidence in its leadership, and the overall stability of the organisation. Dr Paul Tambyah, Chairperson, said, “The CEC line-up has a good mix of party veterans and bright young people with diverse talents and opinions, underpinned by a common dedication to a more democratic Singapore. Singaporeans can be confident that our team will be able to run a great town council, or two, and raise critically important questions in parliament with creative solutions for a better future for all of us.”
Secretary-General Dr Chee Soon Juan also emphasised the need for a coherent, unified approach to strategic planning and public engagement as the party prepares for the General Election. “We’re gearing up for an election towards the second half of this year and everything from getting out our message to our groundwork must continue apace. The nuts and bolts of election activities need to be put in place in the coming weeks and months.”
The current CEC line-up is as follows:
